Robusta Coffee

Robusta coffee is the most popular and widely grown coffee in Sabah, Borneo especially in the Tenom area. Nearly 60 percent of coffee production in Malaysia is grown here. Robusta coffee has a large coffee beans size, oval shape, high caffeine and has a less fragrant aroma. Robusta can be developed in an environment where coffee arabica will not grow.

Coffee Plants in Tenom District have begun since colonial times where colonizers have identified the soil and agro-climate adaptations in this area for coffee crops. Smallholders are provided with seedlings, fertilizers and advisory services from the Department of Agriculture through a coffee cultivation program. The methods in coffee cultivation vary according to the location where there are farmers who grow in monocrops and others who have been planting coffee mixed with other crops such as intercropping with fruits and banana.

Robusta coffee in Tenom area has two peak earnings. The first highlight is usually from May to June and the second is between October and November. However the trend of coffee fruit production is now uncertain as before. Flowers of white robusta coffee come from the nodes almost simultaneously in the branches and trees. The young coffee fruit will be colored green gathering near the branches.

The robusta coffee is usually ripe almost simultaneously. This is because the time of robusta coffee leaves pollinate from each branch almost at the same time. The cultivation and maintenance of robusta coffee in the Tenom area is good, which usually allows it to mature in almost the same time.
